The Cyber-shot RX1 is one of three new Sony full-frame cameras coming in late 2012.
We're still about a week away from the biennial Photokina show in Cologne, Germany, but Sony has already made a huge splash with a slew of new camera announcements. Many of the company's new models are built around full-frame CMOS sensors, which are more than twice as big as the APS-C sensors found in the majority of consumer-level DSLRs.
The most impressive engineering feat of the bunch is the Cyber-shot RX1, which boasts a full-frame sensor despite being just a bit larger than your average point-and-shoot camera. It's the first fixed-lens camera anywhere near its size that packs a full-frame sensor. It costs $2800, which makes the still-pretty-expensive Sony Cyber-shot RX100 ($650) seem like a bargain.

Sony also took the wraps off a few more interesting cameras that will be on display at Photokina and available later this year, including the company's first translucent-mirror full-frame camera (the Sony Alpha SLT-A99), the company's first interchangeable-lens full-frame camcorder (the Sony Handycam NEX-VG900), and a new high-end mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera that offers built-in Wi-Fi and the ability to run apps (the Sony Alpha NEX-6).
